3 steps a day keeps the dentist away!
No, seriously folks, GO TO THE DENTIST twice per year for your check-ups and cleaning!
Ok, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s chat about how to use essential oils for amazing oral health! You may have never considered what’s in your toothpaste or mouth rinse, but I encourage you to check the ingredients…can you pronounce them? Do you know what they do? Can you confirm their health benefits or safety? Is there food coloring or artificial flavoring in them? Truth be told, even though you are spitting all this stuff out, it’s still being absorbed in to your body…it still affects your health.
doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are little brown glass bottles full of innumerable benefits…oral care included. Making your own mouth rinse is healthy for your body, natural, more effective, less expensive and is E.A.S.Y.!
It just takes a few ingredients for this simple DIY mouth rinse!

We’ll start with a base of OnGuard Protective Blend. On top of the Immune boosting power of this amazing oil, the blend of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Myrrh cleans and freshens breath.
Then you’ll choose one of these oils {if you wish} to customize your mouth rinse further.
Lemon: Due to its high limonene content, Lemon, is a powerful antioxidant which makes it perfect to support gum health. It also assists in a brighter, whiter smile.
Clove: Clove essential oil has powerful antibacterial properties which are known to inhibit the growth of oral bacteria as well as being a natural disinfectant. It is also suggested that Clove plays a significant role in gum health and can soothe oral discomfort.
Peppermint: Besides combating stinky breath, its major active ingredient is menthol which has powerful antimicrobial properties that are known to be effective against bacteria that thrive in the mouth. The menthol in Peppermint is what gives you a fresh, minty, cooling experience.
I myself love the benefits of additional clove and have seen incredible improvement in my gum health. Hubby loves the addition of lemon to help with those not so sexy coffee stains on his teeth. And let’s just say, the teens in this house are in need of a little extra punch of peppermint to keep their breath fresh! It takes me less than 10 minutes per month to wash our 5 bottles and do a custom refill for each of us. As our oral care needs change, the oils I add change and you’d be hard pressed to spend more than $1.50 on each refill! Top that, naturally!!!
*For an added punch, add 2 Tbsp of liquid coconut oil. This adds amazing benefits to your oral health by incorporating oil pulling in to your routine. If adding the coconut oil, try to swish around your mouth for 5+ minutes to reap the additional benefits. See notes section of recipe for additional information on oil pulling.

Step 1: FLOSS
*Skip the ones that have artificial flavors
Step 2: BRUSH your teeth for 2 minutes using doTERRA’s OnGuard Natural Whitening Toothpaste
doTERRA’s fluoride-free Natural Whitening Toothpaste combines the protective benefits of the proprietary doTERRA On Guard blend of CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils with other natural ingredients that help clean teeth, reduce plaque, and whiten teeth with gentle polishing agents. The doTERRA On Guard blend of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils provides an extra cleaning boost. Additional essential oils of Peppermint and Wintergreen, and the natural sweetener xylitol, give doTERRA On Guard Natural Whitening Toothpaste a refreshingly unique cinnamon-mint flavor that leaves your breath—and toothbrush—fresh and clean throughout the day.
*And surely you are replacing your toothbrush every 3 months, right?
Step 3: Use a MOUTH RINSE
Don’t skip this step!!! Even with proper flossing and thorough brushing, there is gunk hiding all over! And how much attention did you pay to your gums?
So, let’s bring in the food component of oral health. You can do steps 1…2…3…every.single.day but if you are slurping down soda’s, chomping on gum, nibbling on chips and indulging in nightly desserts you are putting your oral health {and more} at risk! Personal care encompasses our “whole” body… what we put on it, what we put in it and what we physically do to it. A well run machine requires intentional care!

Oil Pulling has been used for centuries and has recently gained popularity in the U.S. It’s primary purpose is to be an oral detoxification method that pulls the toxins out of your mouth to create an environment that supports cavity and disease prevention. Here is a wonderful article on oil pulling. Note that my method is not the full method being that it’s part of a mouth rinse and only done for 5 minutes. I can say from my personal experience that my gum health has improved significantly since I incorporated this in to my mouth rinse!
